CRL's Tees Viaduct Project Shortlisted for ICE's Robert Stephenson Award

ICE North East presents the Robert Stephenson Awards (RSAs) every year as a celebration of civil engineering excellence in the region.

The awards are made for Civil Engineering projects with a regional dimension in recognition of particular merit, physical achievement, innovation or ingenuity. Projects must demonstrate contribution to research and production of technical papers. These esteemed awards recognise projects that demonstrate excellence in concept, planning, design, construction, demolition, maintenance or operation.

CRL are proud to announce that the Tees Viaduct Sub-structure Refurbishment (TVSR): Concrete Repairs and Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) to Piers N10, N11, N12, N13, N14, N48, N50 and N51 has this year been shortlisted in the Medium Project category.

The A19 Tees Viaduct, or Tees Flyover is a high level six-lane dual carriageway road bridge in the Northeast of England carrying the main A19 trunk road north–south across the river Tees. It has a total length of 2.9km.

Since opening in November 1975, the structure has had problems with corrosion and repairs have been necessary at various times through its life to increase the longevity of the structure.

CRL has been working on this structure since October 2020 when we were appointed as specialist sub-contractor by Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM), the Tier 1 Maintenance Contractor to the Autolink BDFO to carry out Phase 1 of the repairs and cathodic protection. Owing to the successful delivery of Phase 1 and the smooth running of Phase 2, CRL have recently been awarded the 3rd Phase of the refurbishment works.

CRL has worked collaboratively with SRM on the 3rd phase of the project which includes concrete repairs, surface preparation and cathodic protection to a further sixteen bents/piers along the viaduct. This is the largest bridge repair project outside of the National Highways Framework to be awarded to CRL.

Contracts Manager Carl Fox commented - “The key to the ongoing success of this project is due to the collaboration between CRL, Sir Robert McAlpine, and the Designers AECOM. This has helped with forming an excellent understanding between all parties, resulting in everyone working to achieve the same goal.”
