Concrete Repairs Limited, along with the Yorkshire North East Highways Community, recently participated in the Leeds Dock Dragon Boat Race. This event was to support and raise monies for the DKMS blood cancer charity.
DKMS has been serving communities in the UK since 2013 and have the biggest stem cell register in the country. They have over 1 million blood stem cell donors recorded and have assisted over 2,100 people with a second chance at life by enabling them to have stem cell treatment.
The Leeds Dock Dragon Boat Race is more than a competition - it is a celebration of community values and shares the goal of making a difference by raising funds for this fantastic organization. Teams from all walks of life join and paddle with determination and passion to support a cause that they truly care about.
Two of CRL’s most prominent athletes (supposedly!), Adrian Pike and Simon Dewsbury from our Highways Division, led the charge in this challenge. Along with two dozen other members of the SDF/PDF community from the Yorkshire and Northeast regions, our intrepid duo pushed the boundaries of human endeavour (and aimed not to sink in the process!).
The team, aptly named ‘Oar or Nothing,’ took to the water with high enthusiasm and raced with remarkable coordination and resilience (or so we are told!). Despite the challenge of never having done this type of thing before, the team managed to stay afloat and finish the race, but unfortunately didn’t manage to win! Maybe next time…
Concrete Repairs Limited consistently aims to provide a positive social, economic, and environmental impact in society, and this event is just another example of how we are supporting and serving the communities in which we work!
In all, an incredible £1,430 was raised, which is a fantastic achievement in itself, but more importantly, the monies raised will go some way to helping DKMS continue with their lifesaving work of saving lives (which is the real achievement!).
