Seaworld Helipad Remediation

Project
Seaworld Helipad Remediation
Client
Building Rectification Services
Location
Gold Coast, QLD

CRL was engaged undertake concrete remediation works on the Northern Landing Pad at SeaWorld, located on the Gold Coast. The helipad, constructed approximately 50 years ago, exhibited extensive deterioration, including advanced spalling of concrete elements, particularly on the soffit areas situated within the marine splash and tidal zones. The structure had not previously undergone significant maintenance or repair.

Works commenced in November 2021, with strict environmental controls in place due to the structure’s proximity to water. The remediation scope included:

  • Mechanical breakout of deteriorated concrete
  • Saw cutting of slab edges pre- and post-hydro demolition
  • Hydro-demolition to remove loose and damaged material
  • Spray-applied repair mortar reinstatement using over 500 bags of Fosroc repair products

Repairs were completed in February 2022, restoring the helipad’s structural integrity and extending its service life.

Project Challenges and Environmental Controls

The location within a marine environment presented multiple logistical and environmental challenges:

  • Rising tide levels required continuous monitoring to ensure safe access and working conditions
  • Environmental protection netting was installed, regularly adjusted, and maintained to prevent debris from entering the water
  • Concrete breakout and repair activities were carefully managed to minimise environmental impact
  • Additional temporary lighting was provided for work conducted in low natural light conditions under the helipad
  • Scaffolding was erected over water to facilitate access for hydro-demolition works
  • Bracing of formwork was required to withstand tidal movement and prevent displacement during repairs

Through careful planning and environmental stewardship, CRL successfully completed the works while maintaining high safety and quality standards. The structural remediation has significantly extended the lifespan of the helipad and ensured its continued safe use.
