Project Background
Since 2019, CRL has been engaged annually to apply the Matacryl WPM waterproofing system to the Westgate Bridge steel deck. These works are carefully scheduled during a narrow shutdown window between Christmas and New Year to minimise traffic disruption. The initial scope began with approximately1,000 m² in 2019 and has since expanded to cover around 2,800 m² per year, typically encompassing a full lane width between expansion joints.
The application is delivered within a stringent three-day program, operating continuously under a 24-hourschedule to ensure timely completion. This high level of planning and execution allows CRL to provide reliable, durable waterproofing solutions while maintaining essential traffic flow on one of Melbourne’s key transport corridors.
Project Outcome & Achievements
- On-Time Delivery: Each year’s works were completed within the three-day shutdown window.
- High-Quality Standards: All QA benchmarks consistently achieved, including >2.5 MPa adhesion and full compliance with film thickness specs.
- Zero Safety Incidents: Strong planning enabled safe delivery near live traffic with no reportable incidents.
- Long-Term Performance: Matacryl WPM continues to perform as designed with no membrane failures reported.
- Client Satisfaction: Positive feedback from client and certifying bodies, reinforcing CRL’s reputation for safe, high-quality delivery under time-critical conditions.
Key Constraints:
- Limited Shutdown Window: All works must be completed between Christmas and New Year, requiring advanced planning and labour booking.
- 24-Hour Operations: Continuous work in overlapping shifts demands robust supervision, fatigue management, and logistics coordination.
- Weather Sensitivity: Application is temperature- and humidity-dependent; contingencies are in place for adverse conditions.
- Live Traffic Risks: Works occur adjacent to active traffic lanes, requiring full safety and traffic control measures.
- Strict QA Requirements: On-site testing and third-party verification are mandatory and cannot be deferred due to holidays or limited staffing.
